However, if your Mac mostly sits on a desk or you bring your laptop back to the same place every night, you’ll likely be better served by a 3.5-inch drive-they’re faster, cheaper, and store more data. Such a drive might also be best for a MacBook-equipped college student. If you work mostly on a notebook Mac and lead a mobile lifestyle, carrying a bus-powered 2.5-inch drive ensures you can back up while traveling. Plus, they tend to support more connection types, making them more flexible. However, they cost less per gigabyte and can be bought easily in sizes up to 8 TB.

They’re inexpensive and plenty fast for backups. Luckily, for most people, the right choice is simple: a drive that supports USB 3. That might sound tricky, what with USB 3, FireWire, USB-C, and Thunderbolt. With external hard drives, you need to match the ports on your Mac with the ports on the drive. But if a 1 TB drive costs $100 and a 2 TB drive costs $130, it’s worth the extra $30 to double the available space. You could get by with a 1 TB backup drive, which would be twice as large as your internal drive.

Say you use a MacBook Pro with a 512 GB SSD. Buy the largest drive you can reasonably afford, as long as it will hold at least two to three times as much data as you have or anticipate creating in the near future. You could put a lot of effort into figuring this out, but for most people, the answer simple. The first question when looking for a backup drive is how much data it needs to hold. Here’s our rundown of what to look for, with recommendations. If you don’t have an appropriate hard drive, you need to get one, and there are tons of options. And turning on Apple’s Time Machine backup feature is easy-simply open System Preferences > Time Machine, click Select Backup Disk, and pick a hard drive to hold your backups. Unlike flossing, once you set up backups, they don’t require daily attention. On windows, there is a little something of everything, with most of it sucking.Īll of which is to say, when you buy Apple you are not just laying for a machine.Backing up your Mac is like flossing your teeth: everyone knows they should do it every night, but too many people never get around to it. And further remember what a colossal pain it is to implement any sort of sane backup of OS. I also remember having to reinstall the operating system because Restore Points magically got erased while trying to recover.

Re Apple's decline: I remember 2-3 years ago my Windows machine constantly failing to install "critical updates" over and over again. Anyways, it cost about twice what it would have cost to get the memory at the time I configured the system on the Apple web site. I doubt that they would gone along with that, and missed out on the very high margin on the cost of the memory chips.

I should have asked if they would do the upgrade using memory chips that I supplied, but decided not to go that route. The labor costs were fine, but they really rip you off on the cost of the memory chips.

Well, when I saw what would be needed to do the upgrade myself, taking just about everything out of the case, I decided to have Apple do it. I had read that memory was user upgradeable. Where Apple really got me, though, was that I selected 8GB of memory, intending to upgrade the memory myself if I needed it. Very happy to have found these Samsung drives, runs at the speed of an internal drive. They’re NVMe drives…When I got the Mac Mini with an internal 256GB SSD, I knew that I’d be adding an external drive. The Samsung X5 SSD’s connected via TB3 are very fast.
